TMZ.com and The Miami Herald are reporting that former nine-time All-Pro linebacker and NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident in Miami-Dade County late on Sunday night. Taylor, who is regarded by many as the greatest defensive player in the history of the NFL, was booked into jail at 9:57 PM and released on bond shortly after.
The Miami Herald is reporting that the accident occurred at Northwest 103rd Street in the northbound lanes of Miami’s Palmetto Expressway. Taylor’s white car had been reported for having been involved in an accident and police responded to the scene, locating the former star linebacker standing next to his vehicle while talking on his cell phone.
Lieutenant James Durden of Florida’s Highway Patrol gave a statement in response to Taylor’s arrest, stating, “He said he had been involved in a crash [but there were] no injuries, [just] significant damage to both vehicles.” When police interrogated Taylor to learn more about the accident, the he reportedly told them that he thought he hit a guardrail as opposed to another vehicle.
Taylor won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants and he received several accolades of prominence throughout his NFL career including the NFL’s Most Valuable Player Award in 1986. He is the only player in NFL history to receive the league’s Defensive Player of the Year on three separate occasions and he was in the media spotlight as a cast member of ABC’s ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in its 8th season.
