Chiefs Release Larry Johnson For Gay Slurs

Although it appeared to be crystal clear as the 2009 season progressed that Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson had worn out his welcome with the franchise, the gay slurs that he made to reporters two weeks ago were the straw that broke the camel’s back. The Kansas City Chiefs’ official website is reporting that the team has severed ties with their troubled running back, citing several factors that influenced their decision including off the field conduct, poor attitude and a lack of productivity.
Johnson went on a verbal tirade two weeks ago when he lashed out at Chiefs fans and head coach Todd Haley on his Twitter account. He also made gay slurs to members of the media one day after using the same gay slurs to insult Chiefs fans. Gay-advocacy group GLAAD expressed their anger over Johnson’s remarks and Chiefs fans created an online petition to have Johnson released before he had the opportunity to break the franchise’s all-time rushing record, according to The USA Today.
Prior to his release earlier this morning, Johnson was within striking distance of the Chiefs’ all-time rushing record, which was just 75 yards away. The record, which is held by three-time All-Pro Priest Holmes, will remain intact due to Johnson’s release. In the front office’s written statement that was made to clarify the reasoning behind the team’s decision to sever its ties with Johnson, the Chiefs cited his lack of production as the most significant factor behind his release.
