Jennifer Hudson will play Winnie Mandela for the movie ‘Winnie’.

Winnie Mandela is the wife of Nelson Mandela, the former South African president.

Hudson told Variety, “I was compelled and moved when I read the script. Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman, and I’m honored to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told.”

There has been some controversy surrounding Hudson’s ability to play Winnie effectively. “But like all Oscar bait, it may end up no more memorable than Hudson’s last go-around on the big screen,” said Rohin Guha of BlackBook.com.

Winnie Mandela continued to fight against the South African apartheid while her husband was in prison from 1963-1990. She was too imprisoned in 2003 for being found guilty of fraud from a funeral fund.
