Sir Paul McCartney is up to receive the Library of Congress’s Gershwin Prize, the BBC reports.
The award was created in 2007 to celebrate popular music and artists’ contribution to the musical world. Previous winners of the awards have been Paul Simon, for both his solo work and his work with Art Garfunkel, and Stevie Wonder. It was named after the Gershwin brothers, whose popular songs are still heard in today’s society.
James Billington, the Librarian of Congress, said that it was “hard to find a performer who had more of an indelible and transformative effect on popular song,” than McCartney. The singer has had numerous hits with both the Beatles and Wings. He has also had a very successful solo career.
The former Beatle will receive the award in a ceremony held at the White House next year. A spring 2010 tribute concert is also planned to honor McCartney.
