President Obama pardoned his first Thanksgiving turkey as commander in chief Wednesday.
"There are certain days that remind me of why I ran for this office. And then there are moments like this where I pardon a turkey and send it to Disneyland," Obama joked to the crowd at the White House, according to USA Today.
The 45-pound pardoned turkey, named Courage and raised in Goldsboro, N.C., was spared along with another bird named Carolina. The birds will be sent to Disneyland to live out their days, and Courage will serve as the grand marshal of the park’s Thanksgiving parade.
The president’s daughters Sasha, 8, and Malia, 11, joined their father in the bird’s pardoning. "I am pleased to announce that thanks to the interventions of Malia and Sasha ... Courage will also be spared this terrible and delicious fate," Obama said.
The birds were donated by the National Turkey Federation, as they have since 1947. The tradition of pardoning a bird each year began 1989 with President George H.W. Bush.
