Basketball great Shaquille O’Neal paid for a 5-year-old North Carolina girl’s funeral after learning of the sad circumstances surrounding her death, according to ContactMusic.
Shaniya Davis’ body was found last week after being reported missing six days earlier on Nov. 10, reports CNN. She was found roadside about 30 miles away from her home in Fayetteville, N.C.
Authorities believe Davis was kidnapped, raped, and murdered after being sold into prostitution by her mother, Antoinette Davis. Mario McNeill, an acquaintance of Davis’, is charged with the murder, according to CBS News.
O’Neal’s spokesperson said he was so moved by the story that he contacted the girl’s father, Bradley Lockhart, and asked what he could do to help. O’Neal paid for the Nov. 22 funeral, which was attended by over 2,000 people.
"What happened to her was tragic. I wanted her to have a funeral that would be as beautiful as she was," O'Neal said in a statement.
