"Dear John” was the highest opening ever for a movie on Super Bowl weekend, and knocked “Avatar” out of the number one spot in the box office.
“Dear John”—which stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried—had a wide audience of teen and college-aged girls. The audience was about 84% female and 64% under 21, according to exit polls.
Other movies that did not quite make the cut were John Travolta’s film “From Paris With Love” opened with $8.1 million; Mel Gibson’s “Edge of Darkness” dropped 59% and “When in Rome” fell 55% in numbers.
According to LA Times, “Dear John” wiped out “Avatar’s” $23.6 million in it’s eighth weekend with its outstanding $32.4 million sold in tickets in the U.S and Canada from only Friday through Sunday!
“Dear John” is based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks.
