The New Orleans Saints won their first Super Bowl in franchise history last night by defeating the Indianapolis Colts by a score of 31-17 in Super Bowl XLIV.
Saints head coach Sean Payton, who made several gutsy decisions throughout the game that helped his team to win its first ever Super Bowl, told reporters earlier today that he slept with the Vince Lombardi Trophy on Sunday night.
While speaking at the podium of the NFL media center earlier this morning, the Saints head coach spoke to the media and addressed his satisfying night of sleep on Sunday night, saying, “[The Vince Lombardi Trophy] laid in my bed next to me last night, I probably drooled on it."
Payton misfired on his decision to go for it on a fourth and goal from the Colts one-yard line towards the end of the first half when running back Pierre Thomas was stopped by Colts middle linebacker Gary Brackett shy of the end zone. However, the misfire as a result of the failed fourth down conversion did not affect the aggressive approach that Payton implemented throughout the evening, as evidenced by his decision to go for an onside kick at the start of the second half.
The Saints recovered the onside kick and opened the second half with a long touchdown drive that arguably served as the most crucial momentum swing of the game. Payton became the first head coach in Super Bowl history to go for an onside kick before the fourth quarter.
